Keeping Time, Palace Hotel Clock Tower /

While the Palace Hotel maintains the grandeur of the building’s Victorian heyday to an impeccable standard, today the clock tower’s mechanism room reveals the true age of the building and the work necessary to maintain its façade.

Throughout the building the Waterhouse mark can still be seen, especially in the use of the Manchester Bee, the symbol of hard work that was adopted as the emblem of the city and was used prolifically in his earlier designs for the Town Hall.

Although always considered back of house, even when f irst built, these details used in the public interior were carried through to the clock faces by Waterhouse Junior, seeing the Manchester Bee used to mark out the quarter hours.  Perhaps as an acknowledgement of the industry that had financially secured the Refuge, or perhaps as a reminder to get back to work.
